Nestled in the island of Kalimantan, the Labuan Cermin Lake is an essential destination for any traveler.
The lake is renowned for its uniquely clear water, providing visibility all the way to the bottom. What sets it apart is the dual nature of its water; freshwater on the surface and saltwater below. The freshwater taste persists down to about three meters (m), after which the water becomes salty.
The surrounding scenery of Labuan Cermin Lake is incredibly calming. Encircled by lush trees, the area exudes tranquility. Visitors can indulge in swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Snorkelers can spot fishes and more just beneath the surface at the lake's depths.
The water's distinct layers cause the fish to separate. This phenomenon is likely due to seawater seeping in through a gap during high tide. Because of different water densities, the saltwater remains below, while the freshwater stays on top. Despite its shallow appearance, the lake is actually about 4 to 5 m deep, so caution while experiencing it is advised.
The Labuan Cermin Lake is situated in Labuan Kelambu Village, Biduk-Biduk District, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province. It requires a six to seven-hour drive from the Tanjung Redeb, Berau's center of administration. That long journey is well worth it, as the natural beauty of the lake could quickly dispel any travel fatigue.
To actually go onto Labuan Cermin Lake, travelers need to rent a boat from the dock which are priced about Rp200,000 for a round trip. The fee can be lower for groups. Upon arrival, the stunning beauty of the lake is bound to captivate every visitor.
