The Papua Province Plantation and Livestock Office gave its appreciation to the Yoboi Village Sago Festival, which showcases the potential of the sago commodity in Papua. Papua Plantation and Livestock Office Head Matheus Philep Koibur stated in Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Papua on Mar. 1, 2025, that the festival highlighted sago as a local food source, encouraged environmental conservation, and improved the local community's economic conditions.
"The Sago Festival has opened up a large space to promote sago to industry players who can then process it into high-value products," he said.
Matheus said the success of the festival, an event for the indigenous people of Yoboi Village to showcase various sago-based processed products, could be used as an inspiration for other regions that also have sago industry potential.
"Products that could be processed by indigenous people are not just in the form of traditional foods, but also modern product innovations that are competitive in the market," he said.
Matheus explained that the festival is in line with the government's efforts to develop the local plantation and food sectors, and the role of indigenous people has shown how sago could be managed sustainably.
He added that the Papua Province Plantation and Livestock Office hopes for the festival to be be an example for other regencies Papua to more seriously develop their sago industry potential.
"In addition to being a promotional event, the Sago Festival is also an opportunity for businesspeople, academics, and local governments to discuss strategies for developing the sago industry," Matheus concluded.
