BYD to accelerate construction of Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Park factory
January 12, 2025Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD Auto Co., Ltd. stated that it has accelerated the construction of its factory in the Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Park in Subang Regency, West Java Province. The factory is claimed to be ready to operate by early 2026.
"The construction of the BYD factory in Indonesia will be one of the fastest. The previous construction of electric car factories in China and Thailand took 10-16 months. However, we are confident that we can complete the construction of the factory and start commercial production by early 2026 if supported by the government." said BYD Asia-Pacific General Manager Liu Xueliang on Jan. 1, 2025.
The acceleration of the construction of the factory in Subang Regency was conveyed by Liu during Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani's visit to meet with seveeral automotive companies in China.
"We believe that, in addition to having an impact on providing added value and creating jobs, the investment is also in line with the Indonesian government's policy to achieve its carbon emission reduction target by 2060 or perhaps sooner. Moreover, the company is currently not only looking [to cater] the large Indonesian market, but also the export market," said Rosan.
The BYD factory in Indonesia is claimed to be the largest automotive factory in the Southeast Asia region. The area for the factory currently spans 108 hectares (ha) of land, and BYD has decided on new developments that will enlarge the site to 126 ha.
The factory is expected to increase its production capacity from 150,000 units to 300,000 units per year. BYD also plans to develop EV battery facilities and premium plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEV) early next year. The workers to be employed at the factory is projected to increase significantly from 8,700 people to 18,814 people.
To support the acceleration of the BYD factory's construction, Rosan said he had planned a toll road and an access road to Patimban Port in Subang Regency. He added that the government also provides support to companies in the form of accelerating the issuance of permits and investment incentives.
