Southwest Papua Launches WISE Trips Sustainable Tourism Program
October 1, 2024The Wonderful Indonesia Sustainable Experience (WISE) Trips Southwest Papua Launch Event held on Sep. 23, 2024, at Sorong Nature Tourism Park (SNTP) kilometer 14 in Sorong City, Southwest Papua Province is an initiative to develop sustainable tourism in the region by the Southwest Papua Province Youth, Sports, Tourism, and Creative Economy Office (Dispora Parekraf).
This program aims to face the challenges of global climate change through the promotion of low-carbon travel, which invites tourists to contribute to preserving Papua's nature.
In his speech, Southwest Papua Dispora Parekraf Head Yusdi Lamatenggo emphasized the importance of cooperation with various parties to maximize sustainable economy through innovation and investment in the tourism sector.
According to Yusdi, the WISE Program is also supported by the Tourism and Creative Ministry, which has launched the Blue Green Circular Economy (BGCE) program for the tourism sector as one of the steps to deal with climate change. Southwest Papua is the first region in Indonesia to apply the circular economy concept in its tourism.
Southwest Papua Acting Governor Muhammad Musa'ad, through a written speech delivered by Southwest Papua Province Economy, Finance, and Development Expert Staff George Yarangga, emphasized that Southwest Papua has great potential in natural and cultural tourism, which needs to be managed sustainably.
It is hoped that the WISE Trips program will be an example for other regions in Indonesia in developing low-carbon tourism to reduce emissions.
The event was followed by a tree planting activity as a symbol of carbon emission reduction, as well as the handover of plaques to five business partners who have collaborated in developing the WISE Trips program in Southwest Papua.
The SNTP was also be the location for the 2024 Kasuari Trail Run event on Sep. 22, 2024, with "We are Ready to Protect Sustainable Nature" as its theme.
The event, attended by Indonesian Military soldiers, running communities, and students, combines sports with nature conservation efforts.
