North Kalimantan Investment and One-Stop Integrated Service Office (DPMPTSP) Junior Investment Management Expert Rahman Putrayani revealed to the media on Jan. 30, 2025, that investors from South Korea are reportedly interested in investing in seaweed management within North Kalimantan.

"For seaweed manufacturing, we have received good news from South Korea," he said.

The North Kalimantan DPMPTSP has asked for around 2.6 hectares (ha) of land to be prepared to support the investment plan. There are three recommended locations, namely in Bulungan Regency, Nunukan Regency, and Tarakan City.

"The industry that is going to be developed later will at least be able to produce semi-finished goods [out of seaweed]. For the technical side, the investors will build a factory to carry out the seaweed manufacturing process," said Rahman.

He added that the investment plan, worth around US$57 million or around Rp1 trillion, will be adjusted to the availability of raw materials and the need for clean water. The North Kalimantan DPMPTSP continues to communicate with the investors as a follow-up to the plan, having asked said investors to do a another presentation on their investment plan.

"We will see how serious they are about this plan [and] where it is going. Since they have calculated every factor [for their plan], it means that there is already a vision for how they would carry it out," Rahman elaborated.

The investor from South Korea will collaborate with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) North Kalimantan for the technical aspect of the investors' investment plan.
