Indonesia and Japan have agreed through the signing of the Letter of Intent (LOI) in Implementing the Kayan Hydropower Project on Feb. 28, 2025, to encourage sustainability in the development of the Kayan Hydropower Plant in Peso District, North Kalimantan Province in support of Indonesia's clean energy transition.

The North Kalimantan Province Investment and One-Stop Integrated Permitting Office (DPMPTSP) revealed that realized investments to North Kalimantan reached Rp35 trillion in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024. The amoung was obtained from various sectors. Companies that have invested in the province include paper companies in Tarakan City, Kayan hydro power plant (HPP), Kalimantan Industrial Park Indonesia, and oil palm plantations.

Bank Indonesia (BI) noted that the economic growth of North Kalimantan Province continued its positive trend in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024 at 4.66 percent year-on-year (yoy), higher than 4.29 percent yoy in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024.

Hence, the office is optimistic that North Kalimantan will get a higher investment target from the central government in 2025.

Total commodity exports through ports in North Kalimantan reached US$ 52.57 million, soaring by 158.07 percent month-to-month from US$ 136.62 million in August 2024 according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) North Kalimantan. BPS North Kalimantan Province Head Mas'ud Rifai stated that the sharp increase in exports was due to the export of non-oil and gas mining goods jumping by 226.36 percent and the export of natural gas surging by 182.56 percent.
