Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road to connect three strategic cities, IKN
January 26, 2025Jasamarga Nusantara Tollroad Regional Division (JNT Regional Nusantara) ensures that the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road would be a key transportation connectivity support for residents of East Kalimantan Province. The toll road, the first one in the Indonesian part of Kalimantan, is managed by Jasamarga subsidiary, PT Jasamarga Balikpapan-Samarinda (JSB).
Designed with a total length of around 97.27 kilometers (km), the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road connects three strategic points, namely Balikpapan City, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, and Samarinda City. People who use the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road could reduce their travel time to the 90 minutes to 120 minutes range from the original 180 minutes to 240 minutes range.
The toll road, which has been operating since 201,9 supports the transportation of goods and services between two strategic cities in the East Kalimantan region. JNT Regional Nusantara Senior General Manager Tyas Pramoda Wardhani said that, as a state-owned enterprise, Jasamarga Nusantara Tollroad is committed to supporting the Prabowo Subianto administration's strategic programs.
"We also have the full support of the SOEs Ministry in realizing safe, smooth, and comfortable toll road infrastructure in the Nusantara [Capital City or IKN] Region so that it becomes a driver of regional economic acceleration," said Tyas in a release on Jan. 23, 2025.
The Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road will be connected to the IKN via IKN Toll Road Section 1B, which starts into South Balikapapn District, Balikpapan City at km 8 of the Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road. IKN Toll Road Section 1B will continue to IKN Toll Road Section 1A, which connects the Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman (SAMS) Sepinggan International Airport to South Balikpapan District, Balikpapan City.
IKN Toll Road Section 1B is currently under construction, while IKN Toll Road Section 1A will be up for tender by February 2025. Public Works Ministry East Kalimantan National Road Implementation Center (BBPJN) Head Hendro Satrio Kamaluddin said that IKN Toll Road Section 1A will begin construction in July 2025 and is targeted for completion in 2027.
"Usually the tender process takes 2.5 to 3 months. If [everything goes] smoothly, the project contract can be signed by May or June 2025," said Hendro.
He added that some of these transportation infrastructure are designed with an elevated structure in the form of a 5 km flyover that allows vehicles to drive above existing city roads.
