WJNC 2024 Caps Off Yogyakarta City's 268th Anniversary
October 15, 2024Yogyakarta City commemorated its 268th anniversary on Oct. 7, 2024, with the Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC) held at the peak of the event.
This year's edition WJNC, has been routinely held since 2016, is a form of art on the street which focuses on wayang based on Javanese adaptation of Indian epics, specifically the live theatrical performance variant or wayang wong.
The performances at this carnival involves choreography, fashion, contemporary music, and light shows. The core of the carnival is decorated vehicles and wayang wong performance being held around the Yogyakarta Monument at the evening.
This year, WJNC's theme is Gatotkaca Wirajaya. Gatotkaca, the Javanese adaptation of Mahabharata's Gatotkach, is known as a figure who is emulated for his strength and bravery. At WJNC he symbolizes the spirit of defending the country as one of Indonesia's mythical heroes.
The 14 kemantrens of Yogyakarta City each had 40 to 50 people representing them at WJNC, including their respective wayang characters. For example, Kemantren Tegalrejo presented Jabang Tetuka - Gatotkaca's name as a newborn - Kala Pracona, Bathara Narada, and Arimbi.
Meanwhile, Kemantren Umbulharjo presented Brajamusti, Brajadenta, and Angkawijaya; Kemantren Wirobrajan presented Utari, Siti Sundari, Abimanyu; and Kemantren Jetis presented Raden Sutejo, and Kresna.
The ceremonial and performance of the wayang carnival begins at 19.00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The carnival's route started from Jalan Sudirman, Tugu Yogyakarta, to Jalan Margo Utomo.
Prior to the start of the event at 16.00 WIB, there was also an art carnival performance from various regions.
Just like the previous year, WJNC collaborated with the art community, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as related government institutions.
