Meratus Geopark Culture Carnival to Increase Sustainable Tourism

The Meratus Geopark Great Culture Carnival was held in celebration of the 74th Anniversary of South Kalimantan Province as well as National Journalist Sports Week (Porwanas) XIV at the South Kalimantan Governor's Office area in Banjarbaru City on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024.

The event was started with Regional National Craft Council (Dekranasda) South Kalimantan Chair Raudatul "Acil Odah" Jannah, South Kalimantan Regional Secretary Roy Rizali Anwar, and Meratus Geopark Management Agency Acting Chair and South Kalimantan Environmental Office Head Hanifah Dwi Nirwana. They all represent South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor for the ceremony, which was also attended by the heads of South Kalimantan Provincial Government institutions.

The event has various activities, including artistic and cultural performances, culinary tours for South Kalimantan cuisine, Craft and Creative Industry Exhibition, Fashion Show, Edu Talk, various competitions for school children to improve their knowledge and understanding of the Meratus Geopark.

There is also musical entertainment that aims to raise a love for culture which took place on Aug. 20-21, 2024, which is combined with the breaking of a Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) record by stretching a sasirangan cloth for 5,700 km.

Raudatul hopes that the carnival is successful so that it can increase local and global awareness of the geological heritage, biodiversity, and culture of the Meratus Geopark as well as suppport the development of sustainable tourism.

"We want people who visit here to be able to enjoy a unique experience, a real journey through space and time to rebuild their pride in noble values ​​and traditions as well as to regrow their love for the motherland to achieve a better future," Raudatul said.

Meratus Geopark Management Agency Acting Chair Hanifah Dwi Nirwana said that all activities held at the carnival were very important, because they explored local cultures that has continued to be preserved such as the cultures of the Banjar and Dayak ethnic groups.

"Indeed, the event is a means of promoting the local community's culture and economy as well as for all efforts that have been done at the site, especially by the local community and all stakeholders as a form of participation without exception, a sense of pride in culture, [as well as] awareness to protect the environment," she said.

Hanifah explained that the Meratus Geopark has many unique strong connections between its geological, biological, and cultural aspects.

"With a unique geological landscape, the Meratus Geopark is home to unique flora and fauna, such as proboscis monkeys. The diversity is utilized by the local community into geoproducts such as sasirangan, a characteristic South Kalimantan cloth, woven purun, and others," she concluded.
