Maluku Province Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office stated that the potential for wind energy in Maluku, especially Ambon City, is currently in the development stage.

"The development of wind energy with a capacity of 20 MW (megawatt) at the Paralayang location in Negeri Nusaniwe, Ambon City is in the coordination stage between PLN and investors," Maluku ESDM Office Energy Head Said Latupono stated in Ambon City on Aug. 25, 2024.

He said that the program had been initiated since 2015, starting with a location survey and installation of propellers, the research phase, and land acquisition.

The survey was conducted by the program's team to determine the condition of the land, environment, wind and altitude. Those steps were then followed by the the construction stage. If the program goes according to its target, it could help the local community meet their electricity needs.

"The entire process has been carried out. It is hoped that it will be continued this year, so that when it is completed it (the 120 meter tall wind turbine) will become an icon on Ambon Island," Said said.

He explained that the central government continues to encourage the development of new and renewable energy (NRE) because Indonesia has extraordinary potential for it, including for wind energy. As an archipelago with a long coastline, Maluku Province also has great wind energy potential.

In addition to Ambon City, which has a wind energy potential of 20 MW, there are also the Kei Kecil Island and the Saumlaki District in Tanimbar Islands Regency. Both have a wind energy potential of 5 MW each.

Said divulged that the peak electricity load on Ambon Island reaches 60 MW, which is currently still supported by the 60 MW Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP) Nusantara 1 power plant ship in Negeri Waai, Salahutu District, Central Maluku Regency.

"If wind energy is operated in Negeri Nusaniwe, it can strengthen the reliability of electricity supply on Ambon Island," he explained.

Said concluded that the development and utilization of NRE, including wind energy, is being continuously pursued by the government in order to achieve the national energy mix target of 23 percent from NRE by 2025.
