President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Aman's copper smelter and precious metal refinery in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province on Sep. 23, 2024. In his speech, the President said that Indonesia has entered a new chapter in the downstreaming of the copper industry, in line with the country's efforts to reduce dependence on raw material exports.

"We want to become an advanced industrial country by processing our own natural resources, so that our GDP (gross domestic product) is based on production, not consumption," said Jokowi.

He emphasized the importance of processing resources domestically so that added value remains in Indonesia. With this smelter, Indonesia is expected to be able to meet global needs for copper products such as copper sheets, cables, and profiles.

"Aman's smelter will process 900,000 tons of concentrate per year with double flash cyclone technology, producing copper cathodes as the main product," Jokowi explained.

The smelter has a production capacity of 220,000 tons of copper cathode, 18 tons of gold, 55 tons of silver, and 850,000 tons of sulfuric acid as a by-product. The President hopes that the operation of this smelter can provide a chain effect for the local economy, including opening up jobs and increasing the gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of West Sumbawa Regency and West Nusa Tenggara as a whole.

"The greatest benefits are expected to be felt by the people of West Nusa Tenggara, and all Indonesian people," Jokowi concluded.

This smelter was built with an investment of Rp21 trillion, with it being one of the national strategic projects (PSNs) that supports the government's vision in realizing the downstreaming of the mineral resources industry.
