Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the government will move import entry ports for several industrial commodities to eastern Indonesia. The three ports to be designated as such are Bitung Port in North Sulawesi Province, Kupang Port in East Nusa Tenggara Province, and Sorong Port in Southwest Papua Province.

"This[the plan for new import entry ports] is in accordance with the proposal to move the entry point for imported goods in order to secure the domestic market for domestic products while increasing logistics capacity in Indonesia," he said in an Industry Ministry press release on Nov. 5, 2024.

Agus detailed several commodities which are the priority for the import entry relocation program, including electronics, textiles and textile products, ready-to-wear (RTW) clothing, footwear, cosmetics, ceramics, valves, and traditional medicine.

The Functional Groups (Golkar) Party politician said the reason those commodities are selected to have their import entry points relocated is because they are vulnerable to the onslaught of cheap or illegal imported goods.

"Thus, the relocation of import ports to the eastern part of Indonesia will be the focus of the Red and White Cabinet," Agus added.
