Hudog Pekayang 2024 Opening Lively and Successful

The 2024 Hudoq Pekayang Festival held in Long Isun Village, Long Pahangai District, was a success with a lively atmosphere. This annual event was officially opened by the Mahakam Ulu Regent Bonifasius Belawan Geh on Oct. 20, 2024 with the beating of tufung.

The presence of Regent Bonifasius was greeted with a traditional ritual of installing lekuq and pinning lavung by traditional culture figures of Long Isun Village, adding to the warmth and solemnity of the event. The opening evet was also witnessed by hundreds of Hudoq dancers from 13 contingents who filled the courtyard of the Traditional Culture Hall.

In his remarks, Bonifasius emphasized that Hudoq Pekayang is both an expression of culture and traditional ritual as well as a symbol of respect for the power of nature and hopes for fertility and community welfare. He also conveyed the Mahakam Ulu Regency Government's commitment to preserve local culture amid the current of modernization.

"This tradition reflects mutual cooperation and togetherness, which are the identity of the Mahakam Ulu people. The Mahakam Ulu Regency Government is committed to making this tradition relevant in the modern era, and at the same time elevating it to the national and even international level," he said.

Bonifasius also emphasized the importance of synergy between artists, traditional culture figures, and the community in encouraging inclusive and sustainable culture-based tourism. He is optimistic that the Hudoq Pekayang Festival could become a leading attraction in strengthening the creative tourism sector of Mahakam Ulu Regency.

Meanwhile, also present at the opening ceremony were the Mahulu Regional House of Representatives Interim Speaker Devung Paran, Mahakam Ulu Resort Police Deputy Chief Pol. Comm. Mochamad Rezsa Adiatulloh, Mahakam Ulu Regency Family Welfare Movement (PKK) Organizing Team Head Yovita Bulan Bonifasius, as well as local traditional culture figures and district heads.
