Good enthusiasm for Rampak Genteng 2024 amid drizzle
December 5, 2024Thousands of residents participated in Rampak Genteng 2024 at the former Jatiwangi Sugar Factory field in Jatiwangi District, Majalengka Regency on Nov. 11, 2024.
The participants of Rampak Genteng 2024, who consisted of students, teachers, civil servants, police, and others, showed their enthusiasm when they did not vacate their seats for the triennal cultural festival even while a drizzle continued to pour down on the Jatiwangi District and its surroundings.
The sound of the tiles played using two wooden sticks simultaneously during the activity became a melodious musical accompaniment. The drizzle that did not stop during the event also seemed to provide its own blessings for street vendors selling plastic raincoats.
Rampak Genteng 2024, which has "Land Work" as its theme, was also attended by invited guests from Yemen, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Egypt, Japan, Thailand, Tunisia, and others. This was the event's fifth edition since Jatiwangi Art Factory (JaF) initiated it in 2012.
JaF leader Ginggi Syarif Hasyim said on Nov. 11, 2024, that Rampak Genteng is a reminder that Jatiwangi District has a long history in making roof tiles.
"For the people of Jatiwangi District, roof tiles and clay are not just roof [components] - they have become a culture," he stated.
Ginggi explained that the event was held every three years to commemorate the Land Year, which has become part of the culture of Jatiwangi District's people. In addition, Rampak Genteng is also a statement about the residents' identity to appreciate and make their place of residence more dignified.
"Rampak Genteng is a statement that we are not just living off of it, because we want to pass on everything to future generations," he elaborated.
Ginggi noted that the activity also showcased community mutual cooperation, because the 4,000 who attended agreed to fight together to show the spirit of preserving local traditions. He also expressed his gratitude to all participants who took part and practiced for Rampak Genteng 2024.
"The entire series of [events] for Rampak Genteng is carried out over only two hours every three years, and we are very grateful to all groups who sweat together from start to finish [for the occasion]," Ginggi concluded.
