Four Things to Do in Majene

Majene Regency is one of the six regencies in West Sulawesi Province. It is is situated on the western coast of Sulawesi Island. Mamuju Regency, the provincial capital, is located in Majene's north.

Majene has been recognized as an old town region, and it is also known now as an education city due to local higher education institutions. The regency also has various tourist attractions that provide a place for people to unwind or simply enjoy their beauty.

Here are some recommended tourist attractions in Majene Regency that you should visit:

1. Dato Beach
Dato Beach is one of the most visited beach destinations in the province. The beach, which is located in Pangale Hamlet, Baurung Subdistrict, East Banggae District, is popular among both locals and tourists. The main attraction of this beach lies in its white sand and rocky scenery.

Dato Beach also has gazebos where visitors can enjoy meals, including Majene specialties like flying fish and penja fish, a local goby species.

With open waters, the beach is generally calm and shallow, allowing for various activities like playing in the sand, swimming, fishing, and snorkeling. It's important to note that the local shore also has well-preserved coral reefs.

2. Tombs of Banggae Kings and Their Councils
The Tombs of Banggae Kings and Their Councils are located at Ondongan Street in Pangali-ali Subistrict, Banggae District. Visitors can appreciate the ancient tombs of Banggae royals, who bore the Mandar title of mara’dia, and members of the Banggae hadat or royal council. These tombs signify the presence and history of the Mandar people in Majene.

The uniqueness of this burial complex lies in the tombstones, which are made from carved limestone or coral rocks. The larger tombstones are intricately assembled with a locking system that is not easily separated.

Besides enjoying the unique and ancient royal tombs, visitors can also appreciate the view of the nearby sea traversed by local boats, which is especially beautiful in the evening.

3. Mandar Museum
The Mandar Museum is located at 17 Raden Suradi Street in Banggae District. The museum houses around 1,304 collections, including geological, geographical, heraldic, ceramic, philological, numismatic, archaeological, historical, fine arts, biological, and technological artifacts.

The attire of the Mandar mara’dia are among the artifacts you could view during your visit here  kings. Additionally, there are collections of Mandar heirlooms and traditional tools. The museum also features a preserved reticulated python.

There is even a room housing replicas of three royal banners, namely I Macan from the Banggae Kingdom, I Naga from the Pambaong Kingdom, and Cakkuriri from the Sendana Kingdom.

4. Somba Culinary Center
Besides natural and historical attractions, you can also enjoy culinary tourism in Majene. One well-known spot is the Somba Culinary Center.

You can reach this place with a 45-minute journey from Banggae District. The Somba Culinary Center offers a variety of Majene dishes, such as jepa and tuing-tuing fish, commonly known as flying fish.

The prices are wallet-friendly. A portion of jepa cassava bread with grilled flying fish costs around Rp20,000, of less than US$2.
