West Papua, GGGI Held the West Papua Regional Energy Forum FGD 2
October 1, 2024The West Papua Province Energy and Mineral Resources Office held the West Papua Regional Energy Forum Focus Group Discussion (FGD) 2 in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) at Swiss-Belhotel Manokwari in Manokwari Regency, West Papua on Aug. 6, 2024. The event is a continuation of FGD 1, which was held in March 2024, that aimed to discuss the development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly energy in the West Papua region.
The West Papua Regional Energy Forum FGD 2 focuses more on involving stakeholders who own renewable energy (renewables) data in West Papua and members of regional energy institutions in the province in the context of implementing the Regional Energy General Plan (RUED), obtaining information regarding experiences related to renewables development as best practices that can be applied in West Papua Province and information about renewables funding mechanisms.
The activity was officially opened by West Papua Province Acting Regional Secretary Yacob Fonataba, who was accompanied by West Papua Energy and Mineral Resources Office Acting Head Melkias Werinussa. In his speech, Yacob emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government, academics, and the private sector in developing energy that can improve people's welfare without ignoring environmental sustainability.
"West Papua has great energy potential, but we must ensure that its management is carried out wisely and sustainably. With strong collaboration, we can achieve this goal and bring real benefits to the community," he said.
The FGD was attended by representatives from West Papua's regional public apparatus in West Papua Province, including the West Papua Province Transportation Office, the West Papua Province Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA), and the West Papua Province Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda).
Representatives from the Universitas Papua (Unipa), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that focus on environmental issues, as well as state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and region-owned enterprises operating in the energy sector were also present at the FGD.
The strategic issues discussed during the FGD included the renewables development , increasing the capacity of local human capital, and the application of green technology that can support emission reduction and energy efficiency. FGD participants also emphasized the need for policies that support investment in the renewables sector to encourage inclusive economic growth in West Papua.
Moreover, the importance of local community involvement in every stage of energy project development was also a major concern. Participants agreed that community participation is very important to ensure that the energy projects that are implemented provide optimal benefits to local communities.
West Papua Regional Energy Forum FGD 2 is expected to be the basis for formulating more targeted and sustainable energy policies in West Papua. By involving various parties, West Papua could optimize its energy potential while maintaining a balance between economic development and environmental preservation.
