Gunungkidul Regency is not only renowned for its beach destinations; it also boasts stunning mountains. A standout attraction is Mount Ireng, also known as Mount Batok or Ireng Hill, which is famous for its breathtaking views and intriguing myths and legends.

According to local legend, Mount Ireng in the Pengkok Village, Patuk Kapanewon (district), Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region was formed by the powerful kick of the warrior Raden Bratasena, one of the local names for Bima of the mighty Pandava brothers from the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Angered by a group of monkeys playing atop Mount Merapi, Bratasena attempted to kick them away. His kick missed and struck large rocks at the peak of Mount Merapi, sending them flying to Gunungkidul, where they piled up to form Mount Ireng as we know it today.

From a geological perspective, Mount Ireng is part of an ancient volcano from the Miocene era that spans 5 to 23 million years ago. Although the volcano erupted and lost its original shape, remnants of it are still visible today. Said remnants form several volcanic rock formations in Patuk, including Nglanggeran Hill to the north of Mount Ireng.

Mount Ireng offers natural vistas that will refresh the eyes, with vast expanses of rice fields creating a picturesque countryside landscape. Visitors flock to the peak to witness stunning sunrises and sunsets, or to marvel at the cloud formations resembling ocean waves moving southwards. The cool temperature at the summit makes it a comfortable spot to linger.

For those wishing to soak in the scenery, Mount Ireng provides ample seating and relaxing areas at the top. Additional facilities such as vehicle parking, tourist stalls, toilets, photo spots, and camping areas further enhance the visitor experience.

Mount Ireng, with its enchanting natural views and captivating myths and legends, stands as a premier tourist destination. Offering comprehensive amenities and spectacular views, it remains a favorite location for enjoying the beauty of Yogyakarta from above.
