Tanah Datar Regency holds 2025 Pacu Jawi series
January 13, 2025Tanah Datar Regency Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office (Disparpora) Head Riswandi, representing Tanah Datar Regent Eka Saputra, officially opened the alek (party/ceremony) for the Pacu Jawi traditional cattle racing event at the Sawah Subarang area of Jorong Koto Hiling, Nagari Sungai Tarab, Sungai Tarab District, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province on Jan. 4, 2025.
The opening ceremony also featured other notable figures, including Pacu Jawi Sporting Association (Porwi) Tanah Datar Regency Head Aresno Datuk Andomo, Sungai Tarab District Head Mirza, members of the Sungai Tarab District Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimca), heads of villages throughout Sungai Tarab District, as well as the ninik-mamak (council of maternal uncles and granduncles) and bundo kanduang (female elders) groups.
"This alek is the opening of the 2025 Pacu Jawi series. The presence of the Regent [who was represented by Riswandi] and his entourage provided our [event organizing] committee with the enthusiasm to make Tanah Datar Regency's agenda, especially this Pacu Jawi event, a success," Pacu Jawi Organizing Committee Head Erdi said.
Meanwhile, Aresno emphasized the importance of the Pacu Jawi event in improving the livestock, tourism, and community economy sectors.
"Therefore, Pacu Jawi continues to be held in turns in four districts throughout Tanah Datar [Regency], one of which is in Sungai Tarab this time." he explained.
"Every cow that participates in the race usually experiences an increase in price, so this also benefits local farmers," he added.
Riswandi in his speech expressed his gratitude to Aresno as the Porwi Tanah Datar Regency Head and all parties who played an active role in making the agenda a success. He emphasized that Pacu Jawi is one of the intangible cultural heritages of Luak Nan Tuo, referring to Luak Tanah Datar as the Minangkabau people's oldest confederation of nagaris, which has proven to attract the interest of local and foreign tourists.
"This Alek Pacu Jawi is in line with the 'One Village One Event' flagship program, which aims to increase the number of tourist visits while providing a positive impact on the local community. In addition to driving economic growth, the event also builds a positive image of our region," said Riswandi.
Pacu Jawi, a unique cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people, is a special attraction for tourists.
