South Sulawesi Calls For Cooperation to Develop Local Salt Industry
September 29, 2024South Sulawesi Acting Governor Zudan Arif Fakrulloh highlighted that the industrial need for salt is quite large. Therefore, he invited various salt industry stakeholders from the production, technology, and distribution side to cooperatively develop the potential of salt in South Sulawesi Province, which would also improve the welfare of salt farmers.
"We must strengthen salt farmers because of the large industrial needs, as well as household needs[, for salt]. [We must] support the distribution [of salt] from farmers to industry, also to the people. Cooperatives and village-owned enterprises must be strengthened," Zudan stated during a visit to Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi on Sep. 26, 2024.
He added that all stakeholders must collaborate to improve the welfare of salt farmers in the regencies of Pangkep, Jeneponto, Luwu, and several other areas in South Sulawesi.
"We must all be unified, [neither] the province, the central [government], the regencies, [nor] the business world cannot stand alone. The people must be united for the progress of all," Zudan continued.
Meanwhile, Pangkep Acting Regent Syahban Sammana stated that the development of salt industry potential in the regency he leads requires support from the central and the provincial government in the form of technology and the sharing of progress in the field.
Each village in the regency has 80 salt farmers on average, and there are three districts that have salt potential with a combined land area of 853 hectares (ha).
"Hopefully salt production will continue to increase like the previous year until the end of the dry season this year. One of the production warehouses for the Empowerment of People's Salt Businesses (PUGAR), which is also assisted by cooperatives, is located in this region," he added.
Speaking on behalf of the Pangkep Regency Government, Syahban also admitted that the region is very grateful for the various assistance from the South Sulawesi Provincial Government that include heavy equipment, vaname shrimp seeds, milkfish seeds, to mangrove seeds.
