The South Kalimantan Provincial Government is developing a bamboo tourist attraction in the Sultan Adam Forest Park, Banjar Regency, by taking inspiration from Malang Regency, East Java Province.

"We have visited Sanankerto Village for this replication study of bamboo tourist attraction development," South Kalimantan Province Forestry Office Head Fathimatuzzahra stated in Banjarbaru City, South Kalimantan on May 1, 2024.

Fathimatuzzahra revealed that Sanankerto Village in Turen District, Malang, East Java has 115 bamboo species and a bamboo arboretum that can be utilized for research and education purposes regarding bamboo species.

"From this republication study we will develop bamboo [tourism] potential, including by adding bamboo collections to the arboretum located in Sultan Adam Forest Park, which is one of the tourist destinations, thereby increasing regional revenue," she said.

Fathimatuzzahra said that South Kalimantan Province has great potential for bamboo development with approximately 2,000 hectares (ha) of land that can be developed into bamboo plantations, such as in Sultan Adam Forest Park and the Hulu Sungai Forest Management Unit (KPH) in Loksado.

She explained that bamboo can enhance water resources by maintaining the hydrological system by being a binder of water and soil, thereby increasing water volume. The South Kalimantan official added that dense bamboo plants can bind soil on slopes, reducing erosion, sedimentation, and landslides.

"Bamboo plants can also absorb a significant amount of rainfall through interception mechanisms, thereby reducing the likelihood of direct runoff and erosion on the land surface dominated by bamboo," Fathimatuzzahra concluded.
