Sandiaga Impressed by East Belitung JPJR 2024

WINDONESIA September 11, 2024 Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno at the 2024 East Belitung JPJR event (Bangka Belitung Islands Province Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports Office)

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahudin Uno visited Belitung Island in Bangka Belitung Islands Province to attend the 2024 East Belitung Explore the Charm of the Spice Route (JPJR) event.

The activity is among the 110 events listed in the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) 2024 by the ministry, and the only one from Bangka Belitung Islands. The East Belitung JPJR has been held for five consecutive years, with the current edition having "Traces of Urang Darat Civilization in East Belitung" as its theme.

The spice route itself is closely related to the customs and culture of the Belitung Malay Urang Darat. In the past, East Belitung was a stopover location for meetings and exchanges of spice products between maritime traders.

East Belitung JPJR 2024 is held from Sep. 5 to 8, 2024. There area traditional menu cooking competition, musical drama, art and cultural performances, spice figure parades, and traditional game attractions at the event.

"We appreciate it, and the [local] economy, including films, is also stimulated by the event. Earlier, we also saw the shooting of the film 'The Bell', which is an attraction particularly since Belitung first became famed through the Laskar Pelangi [novel and film series]," Sandiaga stated in East Belitung on Sep. 5, 2024.

This is the second East Belitung JPJR Sandiaga attended, with the first being last year's edition. He admitted that he is impressed by the event.

"Earlier there was a carnival parade [of spice figures]. It was interesting, and there was an idea to make a Belitung carnival in the feature, uniting Belitung and East Belitung." Sandi revealed.

Although the event is the last JPJR to be included in KEN, Sandi reminded to not have lower central government funding be an obstacle to continue organizing it.

"In fact, the [end of additional funding] must be used as an innovation to [achieve] collaborations," he claimed.

During his visit, Sandi also presented the Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) from his ministry to the Keciput Tourism Village in Sijuk District, Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands.
