Public Works Ministry completes Jambi City SPALD-T

WINDONESIA February 26, 2025 Jambi City SPALD-T completed by the Public Works Ministry. (Antara/Public Works Ministry).

The Public Works Ministry has completed the Centralized Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD-T) in Jambi City, Jambi Province. Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo said that SPALD-T's construction aims to improve environmental quality, especially in urban areas along with the increasing population.

"We hope that the construction of SPALD-T can improve public sanitation services and reduce environmental pollution caused by domestic wastewater that is discharged directly into rivers or land," said Dody in Jakarta on Feb. 14, 2024.

Sanitation problems, especially domestic wastewater, are still a challenge in several regions in Indonesia including Jambi. Household waste, both in liquid and solid form, can cause environmental pollution, damage water ecosystems, and negatively impact human health.

SPALD-T, which is part of the Metropolitan Sanitation Management Investment Project (MSMIP) Program, was built in Jambi City to overcome thoe challenges. SPALD-T Jambi City has a capacity of 7,600 m3/day with a service potential of up to 10,300 House Connections (SR).

This SPALD-T serves two large sub-districts in Jambi City, namely Pasar Sub-district and Jambi Timur Sub-district. Currently, the volume of processed wastewater is 750 m3/day with a total service of 388 House Connections consisting of 360 SR and 28 other connections such as offices, schools, hotels, and business areas.

Wastewater produced from the service area is channeled through a pipe network of approximately 36.8 km to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) building with a pump and gravity system.

Furthermore, it is processed using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology, namely biological wastewater treatment technology included in the attached growth reactor group. The processed water is only discharged into water bodies after meeting water quality standards.

The construction of the Jambi City SPALD-T has been started by the Public Works Ministry's Human Settlements Directorate-General's Jambi Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) since 2020 and is ready to be inaugurated.

The construction work of the Jambi City SPALD-T building is divided into three activity packages. They include two wastewater pipeline network packages by service providers PT. Waskita Karya and PT. Adhi Karya completed in mid-2024, while one wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) work package by contractor PT. Brantas Abipraya-Memiontec (KSO) has been operating since early 2024.

The Jambi City SPALD-T not only serves domestic wastewater through a pipe network, but also serves non-pipe domestic wastewater. Hence, the SPALD-T also functions as a fecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) with a capacity of 100 cubic meters per day (m3/day).
