The Batam International Tourism and Health Special Economic Zone (SEZ), located in the Riau Islands, was officially inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, through Government Regulation No. 39/2024 on Oct. 7.

The Batam International Tourism and Health SEZ covers a total area of 47.17 hectares, consisting of two regions: Sekupang, with an area of 23.1 ha dedicated to becoming an integrated health tourism center, and Nongsa, with 24.07 ha focused on tourism.

Purwiyanto, acting chairman of the Batam Development Agency (BP Batam), welcomed the designation of the SEZ and expressed optimism that this initiative would further boost Batam city's development and contribute to the national economy.

The Batam International Tourism and Health SEZ is projected to attract investments amounting to Rp6.91 trillion by 2032 and create 105,406 jobs over the next 80 years.

In the Sekupang area, the primary activities planned are in the health sector, including the construction of the Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital, an international nursing academy, a medtech park, as well as supporting facilities such as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) center, doctors' housing, hotels and retail spaces. The Batam Hospital (RSBP) will also be integrated with these services.

Meanwhile, the Nongsa area will focus on tourism, with business plans including the development of a retirement village and clinic, along with supporting accommodation, such as cottages, bungalows and motels, which will cater to tourists, patients and their families.

BP Batam is confident that the development of these areas will bring significant economic benefits, including job creation, infrastructure development and sustainable investment growth.
