The West Sulawesi Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Office (DPMPTSP) conducted a mapping of the investment potential palmsin the province. Coconut palms are one of the province's leading commodities.

There are several important findings from the study in the document on the potential map and investment opportunities for coconut palms in West Sulawesi, including coconut palms being one of the province's potential leading commodities for the plantation and agriculture sub-sectors.

When viewed in terms of production volume and land area, coconut palms in West Sulawesi are most dominantly produced by Polewali Mandar (Polman) Regency. One of the main causes of the dominant coconut palms growing in Polman is due to the geographical and topographical conditions which are very suitable for the growth and cultivation of coconut palms.

The area of land for development and production of coconut palms in Polman shows a significant figure compared to other districts in West Sulawesi. Coconut plantation land consists of coconut palms and hybrid plantations, where coconut palms are the largest development area and the highest production.

West Sulawesi DPMPTSP Investment Planning Division Section Head Satriawan Hasan Sulur revealed, based on the data that his party has, the product with the most potential to be developed is coconut shell briquettes.

"A reminder that the business units producing coconut shell briquettes are still very few, as well as the high export demand for this product," Satriawan said on Oct. 22, 2024.

Satriawan also revealed, the area recommended as a strategic economic area for the development of coconut processing centers is Binuang District, Polman Regency.

"The second finding is based on the results of the business feasibility study analysis, it was found that the area that was considered feasible and met the requirements in terms of developing the coconut commodity industry was in Polman. Where, investment for the coconut processing industry in this district is feasible to be carried out," she added..

Satriawan continued explaining, from the analysis of various aspects of the project, it shows that investment in the development or construction of the coconut commodity processing industry is very feasible to be carried out in Mamasa Regency, especially coconut shell briquette products.

"The analysis conducted includes market, financial, environmental, social, risk factors and so on. So, Mamasa is worthy of being a location for developing the coconut commodity processing industry, especially for coconut shell briquette products," said Satriawan.

From the results of the study of the potential map and investment opportunities for coconut commodities in the province of West Sulawesi, here are a number of recommendations from the West Sulawesi DPMPTSP.

Promotion of investment opportunities for coconut commodities, especially for coconut shell briquette products centered in Binuang District, Polman, needs to be carried out by referring to the results of the study and feasibility study of the business in the form of Investment Project Ready To Offer. Where, the results of the analysis of various aspects identify feasibility and various financial parameters indicate business feasibility.

Infrastructure and supporting infrastructure facilities really need to be improved and developed to support the effectiveness and efficiency of the coconut commodity supply chain from upstream to downstream. In addition, coconut is one of the plants whose harvesting activities require special expertise, so that technological intervention is still very much needed to increase the efficiency of the value chain and supply chain.

This is very important to support the sustainability of raw materials for the coconut processing industry, especially for coconut shell briquettes and other by-products. Strengthening regional incentives is needed, especially to encourage coconut farmers to be more serious in planting and managing their coconut plants and not become plants that grow by themselves without maintenance.

Regional incentives for investors also need to be strengthened to provide enthusiasm and confidence in a conducive investment climate.
