June 27, 2024The Mimika Regency Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports (Disparbudpora) Office held a local cultural festival involving the Amungme and Kamoro tribes at the former Self Sufficient Market Square in Timika District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province on Jun. 26, 2024.
This festival presents several events such as performances of the Amungme tribe's characteristic war dance and several other dances performed by the Kamoro tribe.
Acting Mimika Regent Johannes Rettob opened the Amungme-Kamoro local cultural festival alongside other members of the Mimika Regency Regional Leadership Forum (Forkopimda).
The Amungme-Komoro Festival Event Organizers Chair Santi Sondang, who is also the Mimika Disparbudpora Secretary, said that the public is the main actor in developing their areas' culture through festivals, including in Mimika Regency.
"So this festival will be held for the next week at this location, and we hope that the people of Timika [Mimika's capital district] will come to witness it," Santi said.
He added that the festival was held to raise the value of local cultural riches and cultural progress to preserve it so that people can love and be proud of their local culture and products.
Santi also said that the festival's participants included the Amungme and Kamiro tribe, middle and high school students, the Amungme and Kamoro art studios, Papuan Youth Kreatif, and fashion show participants.
"We are providing information to all participants of the festival's activities and performances by showing dances. We are also providing an exhibition stand for the people to shop at," he said.
Moreover, Santi said that the festival is part of a series of events that has been carried out nationally, which include the Indonesia Tourism 2024 exhibition in Bali.
"At that time, 30 participants were involved in the exhibition, with one of the studios from Mimika winning first place overall," he said.
Santi also divulged that the festival followed up three previous exhibitions that were held by the Mimika Regency to promote local culture.
"This festival will be followed by a cultural carnival known as the Tifa Festival in July," he revealed.
