Maluku Integrated Port to support fisheries & transportation sectors

WINDONESIA March 13, 2025 Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa. (Maluku Provincial Government)

Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa stated in Ambon City, Maluku on Mar. 10, 2025, that the idea of the Maluku Integrated Port, which is now a National Strategic Project (PSN), is not just about fisheries industrialization but also the development of Maluku's transportation sector. He added that the port's concept aims to integrate several services and facilities to support various economic activities efficiently in one location.

"The integrated port is designed not only for loading and unloading activities, but also to support fisheries industry activities ranging from distribution, trade, and integrated logistics management," Lewerissa explained.

The Indonesian government has determined for the Maluku Integrated Port project to be included among the list of PSNs which are part of Indonesia's National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029. through Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 12/2025

Lewerissa explained that Maluku currently has notable fisheries and marine resources potential, including in the Banda, Seram and Arafura Seas, which supply 37 percent of national fish needs. That factor makes it possible for the existence of an integrated port to be the key to the progress of the fisheries sector in the region.

"And we can become a region that not only sells raw fish, but we also hoped that there will be a fish canning factory, fish floss and other [processing facilities] related to fishery and marine products," he added.

Lewerissa said it is important to stop the policy of fish transshipment between fishing ships that has lost Maluku trillions in potential income per year.

"So far, [the benefits of] catches from Maluku's large sea area has not been felt by the people of Maluku because the transshipment occurred in the middle of the sea, resulting in no [regional] fees from the producing area," he revealed.

Lewerissa hopes that the project cold be the key towards realizing progress for the Maluku fisheries sector, and thus the overall progress of the province's development.
