Hundreds of hikers flooded the Mount (Mt.) Lawu climbing route on the eve of the Javanese month of Suro, which is in line with the Hijri month of Muharram, on Saturday, July 6, 2024. They carried their complete gear to reach the Hargo Dumilah peak and other locations on Mt. Lawu.

Hikers were seen registering with officers from Anak Gunung Lawu (AGL) and the local government through the Cemoro Kandang climbing route in Tawangmangu District, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java Province.

One of the Cemoro Kandang route officers, Bambang, revealed that most of the hikers were there for spiritual climbs. However, there were also novice hikers enjoying the area near the white crater of Candradimuka.

"Some are staying overnight at the crater while others reach the peak, as the crater is currently quite popular," Bambang explained.

He also clarified that there are no strict limitations once they reach the peak. Hence, hikers can enjoy the views of Mt. Lawu freely.

Aside from the Cemoro Kandang route, the climbing route through Cetho Temple in Jenawi District, Karanganyar also experienced a surge in hikers on the eve of Suro. About 320 hikers stayed overnight and headed to the peak of Mt. Lawu.

"Information from [Karanganyar Regency] Tourism, Youth, and Sports Agency (Disparpora) field coordinator Nardi indicates that around 315 hikers used the Cemoro Kandang route and about 300 through the Cetho route, while the Tambak route was not used," Bambang explained.

In addition to these two main routes, the Pringgodani Hermitage has also become a favorite location for people celebrating the eve of Suro on the slopes of Mt. Lawu.
