The Central Sulawesi Provincial Government informed that the Indonesian Engineering Geology Society's Annual Scientific Forum (FIT-MGTI) that it had hosted was a means to generate new ideas in building sturdy, sustainable and disaster-resistant infrastructure in the region.

"I give my appreciation to this activity as an effort to strengthen institutions and also synchronize the engineering geologist community's perception in terms of desire for development," Central Sulawesi Provincial Government Governance and Social Welfare Assistant Fahrudin said in Palu on July 26, 2024.

He explained that engineering geological analysis is very important for planning the development of Central Sulawesi in a manner that is sustainable and adaptive to various geological challenges.

Fahrudin added that the Central Sulawesi Province is a natural laboratory with its charming geological environment that is interesting to develop.

On top of having the potential for geological wealth in the form of abundant mining materials, he divulged that Central Sulawesi also has the potential for disasters from deep within the earth or faults that have the potential for earthquakes, such as the Palu Koro Fault.

"Moreover, it has not disappeared considering the enormity of the earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction that devastated the Palu, Donggala, Sigi, and Parigi Moutong (Padagimo) areas in 2018," Fahrudin noted.

He said the experience was a valuable lesson for preparing mitigation measures by integrating engineering geology in preparing regional development plans that are resilient to disasters. Therefore, he hopes that FIT-MGTI could produce recommendations for the government to build sturdy, sustainable, and disaster-resistant infrastructure.

The MGTI forum has several agendas thaat encompass seminars, workshops, field visits, and geology-themed poster competitions.
