Changes in North Sulawesi seaport activities for December 2024

Seaport activities in North Sulawesi Province experienced significant changes throughout December 2024. There were 958 ship visits operating in 12 main ports based on Statistics Indonesia (BPS) North Sulawesi data, with 97 percent of them being domestic shipping while 2.4 percent were international shipping. Although the number of vessels arriving was quite large, there was a decrease of 7.71 percent month-to-month (mtm) and a sharper 29.35 percent drop year-on-year (yoy).

On the other hand, the number of passengers using maritime transportation services at the province's ports actually surged by 38.25 percent mtm to reach 140,953 people in December 2024. Of that number, 73,271 people were arriving passengers, an increase of 37.95 percent mtm. Meanwhile, 67,682 people were departing passengers, an increase of 38.58 percent mtm. However, the number of passengers also experienced a slight decrease of 2.18 percent yoy

In the logistics side, the number of goods unloaded at the ports of North Sulawesi decreased 1.86 percent mtm 206,103 tons in December 2024, while at the same time soaring by 44.04 percent yoy. Meanwhile, the number of goods loaded from the ports of North Sulawesi rose 6 percent mtm to 166,538 tons, but it also fell by 22.38 percent yoy.

With this trend, ports in North Sulawesi are expected to continue to improve efficiency and services in order to attract more ship visits and increase logistics flows and passenger mobility in the future.
