The Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI) has so far realized the Industry Ministry's mission of cooperating with all stakeholders in industry to encourage the use of industrial technologies and sustainable innovations.

"Optimizing the use of natural resources by paying attention to standardization and technology that implements sustainable industry is part of the government's efforts to encourage industry business actors to produce superior and highly competitive products," BSKJI Head Andi Rizaldi stated at BSPJI Palembang Business Gathering 2024 in Palembang City, South Sumatra Province on July 18, 2024. The event had "Strengthening Sustainable Economy Through Industrial Standardization and Certification," as its theme.

Andi emphasized that the Industry Ministry is committed to encouraging the leading industries of South Sumatra to be more productive, competitive, and grow sustainably. The strategic steps to realize that call include the implementation of Green Industry Standards (SIH), which are targeted to boost production levels and industrial resilience by increasing raw material and energy efficiency.

"The Palembang Industrial Standardization and Service Center (BSPJI) is one of the Technical Service Units (UPT) that is an extension of the Industry Ministry, especially in the South Sumatra region and its surroundings. BSPJI Palembang can provide  Green Industry Certification Institution services," he said.

Andi added that the implementation of green industry is a notable step to accelerate the realization of a circular economy in Indonesia. The effort is carried out by increasing energy efficiency and the effectiveness of industrial waste management through the implementation of green industry standardization and certification.

BSPJI Palembang's services in support of achieving circular economy in South Sumatra and its surrounding regions include, among others, the Occupational Safety and Health (OSM) Management System Certification service based on ISO 45001, the Environmental Quality System Certification (LSSML) service based on ISO 14001, the establishment of a Greenhouse Gas Verification and Validation Institution or Carbon Economic Value, as well as waste sampling and testing services.

"The implementation of the Industry Ministry's BSKJI program through BSPJI Palembang is expected to become an important part in realizing South Sumatra Province's industrial development agenda in line with the Regional Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIDA), and to support the implementation of the national circular economy through the provision of industrial standardization and certification services," Andi explained.

The leading industries in South Sumatra are the rubber, palm oil, and coffee industries according to South Sumatra's RIPIDA and Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RJPMD). South Sumatra is the largest rubber producer in Indonesia, producing 797,000 tons of rubber or 28.93 percent of total rubber production in Indonesia in 2023.

The province is also the sixth largest producer of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) in Indonesia in 2022, with a production capacity of more than 4 million tons. In addition, South Sumatra is the largest coffee producer in Indonesia, producing 198,000 tons in 2023 or 26.5 percent of total national coffee production.

To support said leading industries, the Industry Ministry, through BSPJI Palembang, has provided SIH Certification services. For example, the Industry Ministry issued the SIH standard for Palm Cooking Oil since 2017 (SIH 10437: 2017) which could be obtained through BSPJI Palembang. Meanwhile, there are eight rubber industry companies that have been SIH certified by BSPJI Palembang since the relevant standard was introduced in 2019.

"The Industry Ministry, through BSPJI Palembang, has provided various services including certification, assistance, consultation and training to improve the competence of [leading] industries' businesses. Hopefully, the BSPJI Palembang Customer Meeting event could be an effective communication forum for discussing and exchanging ideas for sustainable industries in South Sumatra Province," BSPJI Palembang Head Syamdian stated.

In addition, BSPJI Palembang is also expected to be useful in helping to grow the mainstay industries in the region so that it has an impact on the independence and resilience of the national industry and improves the welfare of the local community.
