Solok – West Sumatra's rice production capital
The city of Solok in West Sumatra is often viewed as a stopping point for people who want to travel to the province's capital of Padang some 64 kilometers away, or for those who want to reach Bukittinggi, which is roughly 71 kilometers to the north. Talk to any of its 77,842 inhabitants living throughout its 58.72 square kilometer city limits though, and you'll find out that it is more than just a stepping stone to other more illustrious places though. It produces one of the most respected brands of rice in the country, with rice products that have their own geographical indication certificates from the Indonesian government to ensure authenticity. The city is also a place where Minangkabau culture is preserved, with many locals still practicing rituals such as "Turun Mandi" for newborns, a process similar to Christian baptisms.
Another source of pride for Solok locals is in the local environment. The city has been blessed with a unique geographical identity that has given it plenty in the way of scenic landscapes, panoramic hills, roaring waterfalls and pristine lakes. Climb up 1,800 meters above sea level at Cambai Hill and enjoy views of four different lakes and four different mountains. The nearby Bung Hatta Grand Forest Park is a 70,000-hectare botanical garden with plenty in the way of rare species of flora and fauna. If you're interested in Minangkabau culture, you can visit the Nagari 1,000 Rumah Gadang cultural center.
Its economy is still in the process of reaching its pre-pandemic growth rate. After suffering -1.42 percent growth in 2020 at the start of COVID-19, it grew 3.55 percent in 2021, 4.60 percent in 2022 and 4.81 percent in 2023. Its Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices in 2023 stood at Rp 5.26 trillion, with its biggest contributing industries being wholesale and retail trade (at Rp 1.35 trillion or 25.56 percent), transportation and storage (at Rp 800.87 billion or 15.22 percent), and construction (at Rp 716.64 billion or 13.62 percent).
