Sukabumi – Nature's oasis in West Java
Sukabumi, a picturesque city nestled in the heart of West Java, boasts a unique blend of geographical beauty and cultural richness. Located approximately 120 kilometers south of Jakarta, Sukabumi is framed by lush mountains and verdant forests, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. The city's landscape is dominated by Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango, which are part of the Gede-Pangrango National Park, a popular destination for hikers and eco-tourists.
The population of 360,644 (2023) comprises a mix of ethnic Sundanese, Javanese, and other groups. However, traditional Sundanese culture remains deeply rooted here, evident in local customs, music, and cuisine.
The city's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) has been steadily increasing, driven by key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Sukabumi's economy, with significant contributions from the cultivation of rice, tea, and various fruits. The manufacturing sector is also robust, with numerous small to medium-sized enterprises producing textiles, footwear, and food products.
Tourism is another vital sector, leveraging Sukabumi's natural attractions and cultural heritage. The city is increasingly attracting investment in hospitality and eco-tourism projects, aiming to capitalize on its scenic landscapes and biodiversity.
In 2023, Sukabumi city's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current market prices reached Rp 15.35 trillion, up by Rp 1.16 trillion from Rp 14.19 trillion in 2022, driven by increased production across all industries and inflation. At constant 2010 market prices, the GRDP rose from Rp 9.32 trillion to Rp 9.80 trillion. This growth corresponds to an economic growth rate of 5.12 percent in 2023, slightly lower than the previous year's 5.35 percent.
Over the last five years (2019-2023), Sukabumi's economy was primarily influenced by Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Vehicles and Motorcycles; Transportation and Storage; Financial and Insurance Activities; Construction; and Manufacturing, collectively contributing 71.97 percent to the city's GRDP in 2023. Specifically, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Vehicles and Motorcycles led with a 37.59 percent contribution, followed by Financial and Insurance Activities (11.21 percent), Transportation and Storage (11.49 percent), Construction (6.79 percent), and Manufacturing (4.90 percent).
