Cimahi – A haven for military history enthusiasts
The city of Cimahi in West Java has been a part of Indonesian military history since as far back as 1811, during which governor general Herman Willem Daendel built a checkpoint in the area in order to help deal with what the Dutch felt were weak defenses in the island while they were constructing the Great Post Road that runs across Java. The fact that this area was landlocked at a relatively high elevation some 685 meters above sea level also made it a secure location for the colonists.
In 1886, the Dutch built a military education center and a military hospital, the first wave of what would be many similar military facilities and bases that the Indonesians would later go on to open in Cimahi after its independence. In fact, every corner of Cimahi is dotted with military facilities, which has lent Cimahi its nickname of "The Green City" for all the military curiosities found throughout.
Cimahi today is home to roughly 590,782 residents scattered across 42.43 square kilometers of territory and continues to attract tourists due to its 12-kilometer proximity to Bandung.
This proximity has provided Cimahi's location with a number of strategic properties, such as a relatively cooler climate that has helped the locale to produce a variety of beautiful natural destinations that include numerous waterfalls, like the 85-meter-tall Cimahi Waterfall. Families can visit the Alam Wisata Cimahi resort where they can soak in Cimahi's natural beauty, as well as swim, dine and partake in interactive activities. A more cultural destination would be Cirendeu Adat Village, which maintains ancestral traditions.
Cimahi's local economy has enjoyed relatively steady growth since 2020. It grew 5.19 percent in 2023, with its total Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices for that same year being Rp 40,499 billion, with its strongest business fields being the processing industry (contributing Rp 18,525 billion, or 45.74 percent of all GRDP), the wholesale, retail trade, car and motorcycle repair industry (Rp 6,267 billion, or 15.48 percent), and the construction industry (Rp 5,206 billion, or 12.86 percent). Total investment in 2023 was Rp 1.302 trillion across 230 businesses.
