Kendari – Coastal charms and economic dynamism
Kendari, the capital city of Southeast Sulawesi, is situated on the southeastern coast of Sulawesi Island. It boasts picturesque views of Kendari Bay and is surrounded by lush green hills. The city’s strategic coastal location facilitates maritime trade and contributes significantly to its economic vitality.
The city is home to a diverse population comprising ethnic groups such as the Tolaki, Bugis, and Javanese, who coexist harmoniously. This diversity is celebrated through various traditional festivals, arts, and local cuisine, which attract tourists and foster a vibrant community spirit.
Kendari’s dynamic economy is fueled by substantial contributions from several key sectors. According to recent data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the service sector, including trade, hospitality, and finance, is a major driver of the GRDP. This sector benefits from Kendari's status as a provincial capital, attracting business investments and enhancing infrastructure development.
The natural resources sector also significantly contributes to Kendari's economy. The surrounding areas are rich in minerals, including nickel and gold, leading to a thriving mining industry. In addition, agriculture and fisheries are crucial, with the fertile land and coastal waters supporting the production of crops, livestock, and seafood, thereby bolstering the local food supply and export potential.
Kendari offers lucrative investment opportunities, with the local government actively promoting initiatives to attract both domestic and international investors. Key areas for investment include infrastructure, tourism, and sustainable development projects. The city's ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and modernize public facilities are expected to further enhance its economic landscape.
In 2023, Kendari’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) based on current prices stood at Rp 28.26 trillion, and based on 2010 constant prices reached Rp 18.60 trillion. The significant contributors to the GRDP in 2023 included Construction at 19.04 percent, Wholesale and Retail Trade, and Repair of Vehicles and Motorcycles at 17.44 percent, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery at 13.58 percent, and Education at 8.47 percent.
