Prabumulih – South Sumatran pineapple mecca
As soon as you enter the city of Prabumulih in South Sumatra from nearby Palembang, one of the things that immediately greets you is a giant monument of a pineapple. And for good reason too, as Prabumulih is a major center of pineapple production in the region. Three of its six sub-districts are filled with pineapple plantations and production centers that in 2023 alone cultivated 54,260 tons worth of these spiky fruits. In fact, pineapple production plays such a big role in the local economy for the city's 200,673 residents that it is also featured in the city's official logo as part of its identity. Beyond being a haven for all things pineapples, this 447.31 square kilometer city is also known for being the province's primary crude oil and natural gas producer.
There is plenty to do in the city if you're here for a visit. One of its most famous destinations is its picturesque Kolam Biru lake, located at the Muara Dua tourism village. As its name implies, the lake is noteworthy for its blue color. It also has nearby water park facilities for families who want to have fun together. Another city village, Desa Sindur, is known for its strict adherence to local traditions and is the place to go for more educational tourism. Visitors can also relax at the city’s many parks (like Prabumulih, Wonosari or Prabujaya).
Its economic growth has been on the positive side of things in the past few years, rising from 3.05 percent in 2021 to 5.06 percent in 2022, before slightly declining down to 4.80 percent in 2023. Its total Gross Domestic Regional Product (GRDP) at current prices in 2023 was Rp 9.83 trillion, with the biggest contributing industries being the wholesale and retail trade sector (at Rp 2.63 trillion or 26.74 percent), the construction sector (at Rp 1.71 trillion or 17.42 percent) and the manufacturing sector (at Rp 1.05 trillion or 10.71 percent).
