Palembang –  Heritage, commerce, and modern advancements

Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatra, is strategically situated on the Musi River, which divides the city into two regions: Seberang Ulu and Seberang Ilir. This positioning not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also establishes it as a pivotal river port and a central hub for regional trade and transportation.

The city is a melting pot of cultures, predominantly influenced by Malay, Chinese, and Arab communities. This diversity is reflected in its vibrant festivals, traditional culinary delights like pempek (a type of fish cake), and historical landmarks such as the majestic Ampera Bridge and the iconic Great Mosque of Palembang. The city’s rich traditions and modernity create a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

From an investment perspective, Palembang offers a promising landscape. The city’s infrastructure has seen significant improvements, including the development of the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport and the light rail transit (LRT) system, which enhance connectivity and accessibility. In addition, the Palembang government has actively promoted investment in various sectors, particularly in manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture, leveraging its strategic location and resource abundance.

Economically, Palembang is a powerhouse within South Sumatra, contributing substantially to the region's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Key business sectors driving the economy include manufacturing, trade, and services. The manufacturing sector, particularly in textiles, rubber production, and food processing, significantly boosts the GRDP. Furthermore, the trade sector thrives due to the city’s role as a commercial hub, while the services sector, encompassing education, healthcare, and tourism, adds significant value to the economic landscape.

In 2023, Palembang achieved an outstanding GRDP figure. At current prices, it reached Rp 154.57 trillion, marking an increase of Rp 15.46 trillion compared to 2022, when it was Rp 139.11 trillion. When adjusted for 2010 constant prices, the GRDP rose from Rp 112.81 trillion in 2022 to Rp 118.58 trillion in 2023, which accounted for 5.12 percent economic growth.

The biggest contributors to the GRDP in 2023 included Manufacturing at 32.24 percent, Wholesale and Retail Trade including Repair of Vehicles and Motorcycles at 18.26 percent, Construction at 15.57 percent, and Information and Communications at 7.61 percent.
