North Jakarta – Thriving through diversity

The municipality of North Jakarta is characterized by its coastal setting, with numerous rivers crisscrossing the landscape and merging into Jakarta Bay. The area is known for its extensive network of canals, which not only serve as vital transportation routes but also contribute to the region's distinct charm. However, this picturesque scenery comes with challenges, as North Jakarta is prone to flooding, prompting ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and mitigate the impact of seasonal inundation.

Socially, North Jakarta is a melting pot of cultures, with communities representing various ethnicities and backgrounds. From the historic districts of Kota Tua, with its Dutch colonial architecture, to the bustling neighborhoods of Tanjung Priok and Pluit, diversity thrives in every corner. Residents of North Jakarta are known for their resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, contributing to the district's vibrant street life and bustling markets.

In terms of the investment climate, North Jakarta offers a promising landscape for businesses seeking growth opportunities. The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of North Jakarta has been steadily increasing, driven by key sectors such as manufacturing, trade, transportation, and services. The strategic location of North Jakarta, with its access to major transportation hubs including seaports and airports, further enhances its appeal to investors looking to capitalize on Indonesia's growing economy.

The manufacturing sector plays a significant role in North Jakarta's economy, with industrial zones such as Cakung, Sunter, and Kelapa Gading attracting a multitude of factories and production facilities. In addition, the trade and transportation sectors thrive due to the presence of bustling ports like Tanjung Priok, which serves as Indonesia's primary gateway for international trade.

For the last five years (2019-2023), the contributions from the manufacturing sector were always above 30 percent. In 2019, the sector recorded its highest contribution at 32.81 percent while the lowest (at 30.45 percent) was in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the manufacturing sector contributed 31.47 percent to North Jakarta’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), followed by the wholesale and retail industry at 18.44 percent and construction at 13.77 percent. Based on 2010 constant prices, the municipality’s GRDP experienced a 4.16 percent increase from Rp 350.23 trillion in 2022 to Rp 364.83 trillion at current prices in 2023.
