Gorontalo – A cultural haven and economic beacon in Tomini Bay
Gorontalo City, situated on the Minahasa Peninsula in the northern part of Sulawesi Island, serves as the capital of Gorontalo Province. Established as a province on December 5, 2000, according to Law Number 38 of 2000, Gorontalo City has emerged as the central seat of government and the primary economic and trade hub in the Tomini Bay Region.
Despite its young age as the province’s capital, Gorontalo is an old city rich in history. The city is also known as Veranda of Medina because the people carry out their daily routines with Islamic values that have been embedded and become part of society's life and culture.
With a population of around 1.19 million (2022), Gorontalo is also often called the hidden paradise of Sulawesi due to its unique and breathtaking tourism potential on land, at sea, and in the mountains.
Tourism is vital for Gorontalo's economy, designated a priority by the regional government alongside education and health. The province boasts diverse attractions including natural sites, lakes, religious sites, and marine activities, highlighting its rich cultural heritage.
Presently, the Gorontalo city administration prioritizes infrastructure enhancement to allure both local and international tourists, aiming to boost economic vitality in Gorontalo City as a hub for commerce and services.
The upward trend in investment within the tourism sector appears to be progressing positively, with continued support from a range of amenities offered to tourists every year. These amenities include travel agencies, restaurants, vehicle rental services, hotels, villas, and various other tourist attractions.
The city’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) was recorded in 2023 at Rp 10.53 trillion, with Wholesale and Retail Trade; Car and Motorcycle Repair contributing 10.43 percent, followed by Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries at 7.52 percent, Transportation and Warehouse at 7.39 percent, Human Health and Social Work Activities at 6.83 percent, and Mining and Quarrying at 6.08 percent.
