Pasuruan – Echoes of the past, visions of the future

During the era of the Kahuripan Kingdom in the 11th century, the region now encompassing the 39 square kilometer city of Pasuruan in East Java thrived as a bustling trading port for spices. Adding to its historical significance, Pasuruan served as the residence of many monarchs from bygone eras, including those of the Singasari and Demak kingdoms. The latter notably utilized the city as a base for propagating Islam throughout the region. Today, with a population of 212,466 residents, Pasuruan upholds this tradition as one of the nation's key centers for Islamic religious education.

However, Pasuruan is far from merely an academic hub; it boasts a rich cultural tapestry, owing in part to its extensive history under various kingdoms. Visitors fortunate enough to be present on the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram can witness a distinctive ceremony among local fishermen. This ritual involves adorning their boats and presenting offerings, typically in the form of cow heads, as expressions of gratitude for bountiful fishing harvests. Moreover, pilgrims often pay homage to the gravesites of renowned religious figures such as Abdul Hamid. For those seeking more secular experiences, attractions like the nearby Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park or Edelweiss Bromo Park offer breathtaking natural landscapes. Visitors can also join fishermen on excursions to observe spotted leopard sharks in their natural habitats.

The city has enjoyed significant prosperity due to its rich cultural and natural heritage. Recent economic growth has outpaced national averages, reaching 6.22 percent in 2022 and 5.65 percent in 2023. In 2023, Pasuruan's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) amounted to Rp 10.40 trillion. The wholesale and retail trade sector emerged as the primary contributor to this growth, accounting for Rp 3.09 trillion (29.64 percent), followed by manufacturing at Rp 2.10 trillion (20.15 percent), and transportation and storage at Rp 861 billion (8.28 percent).
