Pekalongan – A UNESCO-listed Batik Capital
Few cities around the world have the high levels of standards in their creative industries necessary for them to earn the privilege of being a member of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. The 45.25 square kilometer coastal city of Pekalongan in Central Java happens to be one of them. The dedication that its government and its 317,524 citizens have preserving, nurturing and spreading the beauty of batik have caught international attention, giving it the honor of being a part of this prestigious group. For hundreds of years, the city has been synonymous with the production of batik, with this wax-resist dyeing technique being used across countless local households to sell batik products as the lifeblood of Pekalongan's economy.
The intertwining of Pekalongan and batik is prominently showcased and thoroughly explored through a visit to the city's Batik Museum, boasting over 1,100 exhibits. For those seeking nature-based experiences, opportunities abound: bask in relaxation at Pasir Kencana, Wonokerto, and Slamaran Indah beaches; embark on a leisurely stroll through the serene Mangrove Park; or venture a bit farther to marvel at the myriad waterfalls dotting the landscape, such as Bidadari, Madu, and Jlarang.
