West Kalimantan's exports grew 7 percent yoy in 2024

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) West Kalimantan Province noted that West Kalimantan's export value increased significantly by 22.54 percent month-to-month (mtm) in December 2024.
"The export value increased from US$ 187.70 million in November 2024 to US$ 230 million in December 2024. Annually, West Kalimantan's exports also recorded a 7 percent increase compared to the January-December 2023 period," BPS West Kalimantan Head Muhammad Saichudin stated on Feb. 14, 2025.
He revealed that the increase in exports was driven by three leading commodity groups, namely inorganic chemicals (HS28) which contributed 58.5 percent, animal and vegetable fats and oils (HS15) that contributed 21.51 percent, as well as rubber and rubber products (HS40) which contributed to 6.54 percent of total exports.
The next three leading commodity groups are various chemical products (HS38), fruits (HS08), as well as wood and wood products (HS44), also contributed 7.97 percent or US$ 18.33 million to West Kalimantan's total exports.
Overall, exports from ten main commodity 2 digit HS code categories contributed 98.45 percent of West Kalimantan's total exports, with a growth of 23.41 percent from US$ 183.48 million in November 2024 to US$ 226.44 million in December 2024.
Saichudin added that India, China, and Australia were the three largest export destinations for West Kalimantan in December 2024. Exports to India rose by 57.99 percent month-to-month (mtm) to US$ 88.41 million, while exports to China soared by 20.99 percent mtm to US$ 32.85 million and exports to Australia jumped significantly by 18,413.33 percent mtm to US$ 27.77 million.
"Total exports to these three countries reached US$149.03 million, or 64.79 percent of West Kalimantan's total exports," he explained.
Overall, seven major countries in Asia still dominate as West Kalimantan's export destinations with a contribution of 81.8 percent out of the province's total exports. On the other hand, the value of West Kalimantan's imports also surged by 36.36 percent from US$50.6 million in November 2024 to US$69 million in December 2024. Meanwhile, the province's imports increased by 54.55 percent compared year-on-year (yoy) for the January-December 2024 period.
The three main groups of goods that contributed the largest imports were machinery and mechanical equipment (HS84) with a contribution of 35.52 percent, Mineral Fuels (HS27) at 18.23 percent, and Electrical Machinery/Equipment (HS85) at 13.12 percent.
"Overall, these three groups of goods contributed 66.87 percent of total imports," added Saichudin.
In addition, three other groups of goods that also play a role in West Kalimantan's imports are Organic Chemicals (HS28), Wheat (HS10), and Ships and Floating Structures (HS89). These three groups of goods contributed 20.68 percent or US$ 14.27 million.
Overall, imports from ten main groups of goods (HS 2 digits) contributed 94.75 percent to West Kalimantan's total imports. In terms of growth, imports of this group of goods increased by 54.27 percent from US$ 42.38 million in November 2024 to US$ 65.38 million in December 2024.
China, Malaysia, and India were the three largest import supplying countries for West Kalimantan in December 2024. China contributed 57.42 percent of total imports, followed by Malaysia at 17.41 percent and India at 6.99 percent.
"Total imports from these three countries reached US$56.45 million or 81.82 percent of West Kalimantan's total imports," he said.
Most of West Kalimantan's imports came from eight major countries in Asia with a total value of US$68.72 million or 99.6percent of total imports. Meanwhile, imports from the United States contributed only 0.23 percent and the remaining import supplying countries contributed 0.17 percent.
With a significant increase in exports and imports, West Kalimantan continues to show positive foreign trade growth. This trend is expected to continue in line the increasing global demand for West Kalimantan's leading commodities.
