Todotua: Palembang New Port to be catalyst for South Sumatran economy
December 10, 2024Investment and Downstreaming Deputy Minister/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Deputy Head Todotua Pasaribu emphasized downstreaming to provide added value for the abundant natural resources in South Sumatra during the National Coordination Meeting he held with the South Sumatra Provincial Government and several central government ministries and institutions.
The meeting's topic is the construction of the Palembang New Port and the Consolidation Meeting between the South Sumatra Provincial Government and the One-Stop Integrated Services and Investment Offices (DPMPTSP) of the regencies and cities in the province.
Todotua stated that the Prabowo Subianto administration is focused on downstreaming for the next five years. Coordination across central government ministries and institutions with local governments, as well as the supporting infrastructure, are needed to carry out that mission.
"A port supply chain logistics strategy is needed to encourage investment and the downstreaming process, as well as the strategy [to obtain] the closest and most affordable energy sources [for said supply chain]," he said on Nov. 8, 2024.
Todotua added those strategic steps will help increase the competitiveness of downstream industries, accelerate the processing of raw materials into value-added products, and support the founding of a sustainable industrial ecosystem. He also expressed his commitment to play an active role in supporting cross-ministerial coordination to ensure the development of strategic ports that can support downstreaming efforts in South Sumatra.
The Palembang New Port's development in Carat Cape, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra has been designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) through the Coordinating Economic Ministerial Regulation No. 12/2024. The port and the Carat Cape area are expected to become a center for logistics distribution and connectivity infrastructure, which could later play an important role in strengthening economic integration at the national and international levels.
"In addition, the port is planned to be a driving force for exporting natural resources from South Sumatra. It also functions as a catalyst for improving the economy and welfare in the Southern Sumatra region," Todotuo said.
