Things to Do at Lake Ranau
June 3, 2024Indonesia's natural beauty is renowned worldwide, with picturesque destinations spread throughout the country. Among these, lakes remain a top choice for local tourists, with Lake Ranau standing out as one of the favorites.
Located on the border between the provinces of South Sumatra and Lampung, Lake Ranau is the second-largest lake on Sumatra Island. It spans about 125.9 square km2. Its stunning scenery and refreshing, cool air make it an ideal escape.
Positioned at an altitude of 540 MASL and reaching depths of up to 229 m, Lake Ranau is a habitat for a variety of fish species, including tilapia, catfish, bony-lipped barb, Indonesian leaffish, and nemurus catfish.
The lake features Marisa Island in its center and a hot spring on the slopes of Mt. Seminung, both popular with visitors. Most tourists access the lake from Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan Regency, South Sumatra.
Marisa Island itself also offers a sulfur-rich hot spring beneficial for the skin. Additionally, Bidadari Beach, located on the lake’s edge in Banding Agung District, boasts pristine white sand.
Nearby, the 25-meter-high Subik Tuha Waterfall adds to the area's allure, providing another scenic spot for visitors.
As of late 2023, Lake Ranau is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB), with an entry fee of approximately Rp10,000 per person. The late afternoon is an especially pleasant time to visit.
The lake's charm lies in its breathtaking natural landscapes and cool, invigorating air. The hilly terrain and valleys surrounding the lake contribute to the refreshing atmosphere, with Mt. Seminung providing a stunning backdrop.
Tourists can enjoy various water activities around the lake, including boat rides for exploring its scenic surroundings. However, swimming in the lake’s deep center is prohibited for safety reasons, with activities restricted to the shoreline.
