Pontianak Ready to Build Multiple Domestic CWTS

WINDONESIA June 7, 2024 Acting Pontianak Mayor Ani Sofian. (Tribun Pontianak).

The Pontianak City Government is set to build a domestic centralized wastewater treatment system (CWTS) at several locations in Pontianak City, West Kalimantan. The initial construction will take place at Martapura Alley in Benuamelayu Laut Subdistrict, South Pontianak District and at Nipah Kuning in Sungai Jawi Luar Subdistrict, West Pontianak with plans to expand to additional sites across the city.

Acting Pontianak Mayor Ani Sofian, explained that the administrative processes for this program began on Oct. 31, 2018 when the Pontianak Mayor signed a Letter of Interest to the Residential Environmental Health Development Director of the  Public Works and Public Housing Ministry's Human Settlements Directorate-General. The initiative is part of the Accelerating Infrastructure Delivery Through Better Engineering Project (ESP), which includes land acquisition, government regulations, and other related matters.

Ani emphasized the city's goal of achieving 100 percent access to safe sanitation. This target aims for 35 percent service coverage through centralized wastewater management infrastructure and 65 percent through local wastewater management for Pontianak's residents.

The Centralized Infrastructure Services Program (CISP) in Pontianak is an investment initiative with Asian Development Bank (ADB) loans, targeting the development of domestic CWTS and local urban infrastructure. The primary goal is to provide basic infrastructure and services to support economic development by ensuring access to safe sanitation in urban areas.

Ani highlighted that the health of Pontianak's residents is a top government priority. She expressed hope that the domestic CWTS' construction will significantly enhance the quality of sanitation facilities and infrastructure in the city.

Domestic CWTS involves wastewater treatment activities using domestic wastewater infrastructure and facilities, which can improve public health. Additionally, the domestic CWTS will enhance the quality of raw water used by Perumdam Tirta Khatulistiwa Pontianak for clean water production.

Ani hopes that the program will positively impact various sectors in Pontianak City, as environmental and health issues are crucial for sustaining the overall quality of life.

"We hope the implementation of domestic CWTS infrastructure and facilities will greatly benefit Pontianak City, fulfilling public facilities, infrastructure, and utilities, especially wastewater facilities. This initiative aims to improve the health of Pontianak's residents, creating a city with safe sanitation access and tangible social benefits for the entire community," she stated.
