The Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR) Sulawesi, has been officially launched at the Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) International Relations Laboratory (IR Lab)'s Australia-Indonesia Center (AIC) in Tamalanrea District, Makassar City on Jun. 5, 2024.

PAIR brings together researchers from Indonesia and Australia to collaborate with Indonesian regional and provincial governments. The collaboration focuses on developing policies to address major challenges in Sulawesi Island, including climate change.

Following successful trials in South Sulawesi, the Australian and Indonesian governments are jointly investing over Rp125 billion to expand research across all of Sulawesi. The significant investment underscores the importance both governments place on collaborative research to support the development of Sulawesi's six provinces.

Unhas Rector and professor Jamaluddin Jompa emphasized that PAIR Sulawesi is unique because it represents a collaboration not only between Indonesia and Australia but also among the best universities in both countries.

"We are also inviting universities in Sulawesi and East Kalimantan to join, as this initiative extends to the IKN (Nusantara Capital City) as our national capital" he explained.

Jamaluddin highlighted that PAIR Sulawesi aims to produce more impactful research results. This initiative is designed to strengthen science or knowledge-based policy.

"Policies must be grounded in science. We consider societal issues or field challenges, not just researchers' interests, but stakeholders' needs," he stated.

"We will ensure that regional governments provide the necessary input, and industries identify relevant research topics to address current needs and facilitate more effective solutions," Jamaluddin added.

The PAIR program aligns research with the national priorities of the Indonesian and Australian governments, including the 2025-2045 Indonesian National Long Term Development Plan (RPJPN) and the 2017-2045 National Research Master Plan (RIRN).
