Indonesia to Designate Four New SEZs

The government is set to designate four new Special Economic Zones (SEZs). National SEZ Council Acting Secretary General Rizal Edwin, stated that the four zones have been agreed upon and are in the process of being formalized through a Government Regulation (PP).

"This is for investment; the total amount from these four SEZs is Rp161 trillion," Rizal explained during a press conference in Jakarta on July 22, 2024.

The four SEZs include firstly Nipa SEZ in Batam City, Riau Islands Province, proposed by Ainusa Putra Sekawan. This SEZ will be used for logistics and distribution activities, as well as energy development.

Next is Edutek Medika International SEZ in the BSD City area of Banten Province proposed by Surya Inter Wisesa (SIW). This SEZ will be used for research, digital economy and technology development, education, health, and creative industries.

"Monash University Indonesia is located here because of the education theme. So Indonesian students won't need to go abroad for schooling," Rizal explained.

The third SEZ is the International Health Tourism SEZ in Batam City proposed by Karunia Praja Pesona. This SEZ will be used for tourism and health activities.

Lastly, the Green Industry and Bungku SEZ in Morowali proposed by Anugrah Tambang Industri. The planned activities for the SEZ include production and processing, logistics and distribution, and energy development.

"We hope these SEZs will be established by the current government, but even if their enactment are not finished it could be continued [by the next Indonesian administration]," Rizal concluded.
