Inaugural Export of Southeast Sulawesi Live Groupers to Hong Kong
October 28, 2024The Finance Ministry's Customs and Excise Directorate-General Kendari City Customs and Excise Office along with the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) Southeast Sulawesi Province Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Office; or Southeast Sulawesi Quarantine, released the first export of live groupers from Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi to the Hong Kong market. The export for 3,200 kilograms (kg) of the fishes was carried out by Bintan Indo Sejahtera on Oct. 15, 2024.
Kendari City Customs and Excise Head Tonny Riduan P. Simorangkir stated that there were several types of groupers sent in the first export. There are four types of fish, namely tiger grouper, batik grouper, sunu grouper, and mixed grouper.
"The 3,200 kg of live grouper were transported using the MV CHEUNG KAM WING, CHEUNG LA. The total export value reached US$19,200," he added.
Tonny said that the export is expected to encourage accelerated economic growth in Wakatobi Regency and encourage local fishermen to be more active in optimizing their businesses.
"Kendari City Customs and Excise, as well as Southeast Sulawesi Quarantine, will continue to strive towards encouraging the Southeast Sulawesi fisheries sector to be able to compete in the international market. We hope [such competitiveness] could improve the quality of the local and national economy in the future," he concluded.
