FPM 2024 showcases Minang and Tanah Datar Regency culture

Excitement and West Sumatra's cultural wealth are showcased during Minangkabau Charm Festival (FPM) 2024, which was held Dec. 5-8, 2024. The event was filled with various Minangkabau cultural celebrations, traditions, and local wisdom of the excellence of the province's nagari or village tourism.

FPM 2024 is an event held to help preserve Minangkabau culture and promote the charming tourism and culture of Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. The opening of FPM 2024, with "Cultural Charm for the World" as its theme, was held at Istano Basa Pagaruyung with cultural performances.

The series of FPM 2024 activities are divided into two zones. An Authentic Minangkabau cultural parade was held on the first day in Zone 1, continued with the galombang dance. Promotional activities for Tanah Datar tourism were held amid those activities. After them are announcement for the Best Nagari and performances by Nan Tacelak Art and Anak Nagari. On the second day, cultural performances were held by Anak Nagari Lubuk Linggau, Nagari Koto, and Nagari Padang Laweh.

Meanwhile, activities in Zone 2 were enlivened by several exhibitions and competitions such as the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) exhibition, the tourism village exhibition, the Kampuang Kopi event, and the alu katentong or Minangkabau cultural painting competition. This zone was also used as the location for the Sulam Kapalo Samek Fashion Show, the exhibition on Minangkabau's matrilineal culture, and the heirloom exhibition.

Moreover, makan bajamba, a tradition where many Minang people sit down together on the floor indoors to dine for Islamic, traditional cultural, and/or important occasions, is also held held in Zone 2. FPM 2024 also features a marandang baluik activity, focused on cooking Tanah Datar Regency's characteristic eel-based rendang, and a coloring competition for children.

FPM 2024 has Additional Zones in Nagari Pangian and Nagari Padang Laweh. The One Nagari One Event was presented in Nagari Pangian  to encourage cultural activities in West Sumatran nagaris, while visitors could watch the pacu jawi bull racing in Nagari Padang Laweh.

Visitors have the opportunity to watch silek tuo, the oldest traditional Minangkabau martial art, at FPM 2024. The art is an ancestral heritage that has been passed down intergenerationally, and it contains cultural, philosophical, and spiritual values.

The last day of FPM 2024 was enlivened with cultural performances by children from Nagari Gurun Village, Nagari Koto Baru, and Nagari Tanjung Barulak as well as the Minang Gerak Lakon Studio. In addition, the final day has the 'Minangkabau Babudayo' educational talk show for school and college students.

The organizing of FPM 2024 is not just a celebration of art, but a gathering of the Minangkabau people to promote local culture to foster it into continuing to be part of Minang people's lives. FPM 2024 was selected as one of 110 agendas in the Tourism Ministry's Kharisma Event Nusantara (KEN) list, a strategic program to promote tourism destinations, increase foreign tourist visits, encourage domestic tourist trips.
