WINDONESIA June 3, 2024 BP Batam Head Muhammad Rudi. (BP Batam).

The Batam Free Trade and Free Port Zone Development Authority (BP Batam) is fast-tracking the development of the Batam International Health Tourism Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto approved the creation of three SEZs in Indonesia, including one in Batam, on May 28, 2024.

“This marks a significant step towards the rapid development of the Batam Health Tourism SEZ,” BP Batam Head Muhammad announced on Jun. 2, 2024.

Rudi revealed that the Batam International Health Tourism SEZ aims to attract Rp6.91 trillion of investment by 2032, and it is expected to create 105,406 jobs over the next 80 years.

“We have a directive from the Coordinating Economic Ministry to see investment in the SEZ within the next year,” he added.

Rudi highlighted the positive impacts of the SEZ on Batam, including development, economic growth, improved community welfare, and job creation with substantial multiplier effects.

The Batam International Health Tourism SEZ will span 47.17 hectares (ha), with 23.10 ha in Sekupang District dedicated to integrated health tourism and 24.08 hectares in Nongsa District focused on tourism.

The proposal met all requirements, with full land acquisition and main investors, Apollo Hospitals India and the Mayapada Group, confirmed for international hospital development.

Sekupang will host key healthcare activities, including the Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital, an International Nursing Academy, a MedTech Park with motion, ice, compression, elevation (MICE) facilities, doctors' housing, a dormitory, a hotel, and retail spaces.

Batam Hospital and its facilities will also be integrated into the SEZ, alongside the Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital.

Meanwhile, Nongsa will feature a Retirement Village & Clinic and various accommodations such as cottages, bungalows, and motels for tourists, patients, and their families.

“This SEZ meets the formation requirements as outlined in Government Regulation No. 40/2021 on SEZs,” Rudi concluded.
