Mining sector activities in Central Papua Province declining by 32.82 percent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025 led to the province's economy contracting by 25.53 percent year-on-year (yoy) according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data. In contrast, the Central Papua economy surged 28.27 percent yoy in Q1 2024. The province also has the worst impact on the Maluku and Papua region's economic performance, contributing 8.19 percent to overall economic contraction based on BPS data.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) reported that it has deposited Rp7.73 trillion for the central government and several regional governments from the company's net profit throughout 2024. The regions which receive a share include, among others, the Central Papua Provincial Government, Mimika Regency as the producing region, and other regencies in the province.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) informed that the development of the Kucing Liar underground mining project within Grasberg mine in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province requires capital expenditure (capex) of US$500 million (about Rp8.2 trillion) per year. PTFI President Director Tony Wenas said that the estimated capex is needed for the next 7-8 years, adding that the Kucing Liar mine would be PTFI's fourth in the Grasberg area.
